I Love Chanel, but is it Worth the Price?

By July 19, 2011

Follow me on:

While going through the countless number of emails this morning I came across an email from Chanel about their limited edition Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Sheer Lipstick. Being a huge fan of Chanel, and sheer lipstick, I was instantly excited to learn more. That is until I found the price; $32. I haven't bought a Chanel lipstick in so long I apparently forgot how much they cost. So even though the new lipstick had really fab shades only Chanel can come up with, as well as fun names such as Rebelle (a true rebel red), the reality of paying $32 for a single lipstick set in (plus shipping).

I think that no matter your financial situation right now the fact is that the economy is still in the dump for the most part. This is even more true depending what part of the US, or the world, you live in. So after seeing the debates over the debt ceiling, knowing the possibility that my family's 401k may tank because of the US credit rating and then factoring in a high price of $32 plus tax and shipping for a single lipstick, I started to seriously wonder is it really worth the price? My vote for now is a firm "no", but what say you? Is there any way under the sun that you will drop $32 for a lipstick right now? Leave a comment and weigh in!

Oh, no! There is NO way I would pay that much for a lipstick let alone any other single piece of makeup. I agree that with the world’s, and especially the american economy pretty much in the dump, why would anyone put out that much ona single piece of makeup?! While the rest of the world has caught on to the economic mess, the cosmetics industry seems to be living in fantasy land. I sure hope they wake up before more brands go the way of Prescriptives, who closed down the brand after the economic down turn.

I disagree. I recently found myself needing a “retail therapy” moment I found myself wandering over to the Chanel counter. I was treated very nicely and shown lots of products which they had me try out. I settled on the tinted moisturizer which was a product I really needed having recently as a result of a medical procedure. the whole experience of shopping was very pleasurable.

So I say, instead of buying a dress or shoes sometimes it’s nice to spend full retail on an item that makes you feel good day after day like a lipstick. Just don’t nesessarly spend so much on a constant basis. Times are certainly hard on most of us. But an occasional treat is also fine fine if you can still pay for your groceries. You might save money on wine or a shrink as a result.
