Don't let the Recession Break Your Makeup Bag

Friday February 20, 2009

Just because the economy has seen better days doesn't mean that you have to ditch wearing makeup and risk leaving the house completely bare-faced. Let's face it, makeup makes us look good and feel good at the same time. So don't let the recession break your makeup bag. Instead, follow these tips for making it through until the economy turns back around because eventually it will.

5 Recession Ideas

  • Buy foundation and/or powder from department stores, but wait until there is a gift with purchase. You don't have to wait for your favorite line, but instead give in and try another company that has a great gift available. Check recent GWPs HERE.
  • Skip on buying moisturizers since you can score a good one in a GWP most of the time.
  • The same for eyeshadows and possibly lipstick. Most gifts have trendy colors for the season, which is why they are called "seasonal GWPs".
  • If you want trendy colors then go for the drugstore brands to save money. Check the ads to see which is on sale and then look for coupons from the Sunday paper to help even more. Keep in mind that most drugstores will take returns since you can't test the products beforehand. Check sales HERE.
  • For fragrances, try a body product from Bath and Body Works or The Body Shop. They are much cheaper, and if you catch them during a sale you get more for you money. Otherwise hit up your local Avon representative for samples and then give one a shot, such as Bond Girl 007.
  • So let's recap: Buy foundation and/or powder during department store GWP time so you can score free eyeshadow, mascara, lipstick, and moisturizers. The samples will get you through until the next GWP, or until you can find a cheaper brand that you like. If you need to buy current colors so you can give yourself a pick-me-up then go for drugstore brands such as L'Oreal and Maybelline, but look for BOGO Free sales and use a coupon from the Sunday paper. And finally, if you need a new fragrance then hit the body product shops when they have their seasonal sales or try a new scent from Avon. If you plan it correctly, you could stock up your makeup bag for $50 or under. This can be your way of laughing in the face of the recession, while still looking and feeling fabulous.

These are good tips, and it is smart to take advantage of sales. My skincare company, EmmGerri, is running a recession-friendly deal right now offering a large bottle of our customers’ favorite EmmGerri Unscented Lotion for $8 (it’s regularly priced at $15). Since a little bit goes a long way, it really is a deal.

I’ve learned a few things from this recession – (1) the importance of saving (2) the importance of not spending money frivilously on overly priced makeup. After getting to the bottom of each and every makeup product I owned (which mostly came from Sephora) I was forced to find replacements that were less expensive. I don’t have time to brave the crowds at walmart, so I do a lot of online deal hunting. Most of my stuff now comes from Ebay shops or specialty cosmetics stores online. I found a great site called Coono Babe. Their makeup is really inexpensive and really great quality. Of note are their lip glosses and face powders. An added bonus – they offer free shipping on all orders. Check them out!
