As requested by one of my readers, here is a photo of ancient Egyptian makeup. The Discovery Chanel digitally reconstructed the mummy that is believed to be Nefertiti. This image is the closest thing to what she may have looked like. Notice the dark khol liner around her eyes and the intensity of the eyeshadow. Personally, I think her makeup is under done here and it actually would have been more intense. The image does make her seem very lovely though, none-the-less.

Wow, the eyeliner! I wonder if it was irritating to their eyes at all…
Awesome photo! It’s so detailed. Great work.
Interesting. I’ve seen the famous Nefertiti bust in Berlin and it is just gorgeous. I agree with you…I think the eye makeup would have been much more dramatic. Didn’t the ancient Egyptians wear it to counter the effects of the sun?
I have a friend who is an amateur Egyptologist. If I recall correctly, sometimes Egyptian women tattooed permanent makeup on their faces. Saves time in the morning, but wouldn’t allow for much variety.
Chances are she would have been using some variety of Kohl or even Henna. I know that some people use Kohl to soothe eyes. It’s even used in the eyes of infants so unless she had to wear contact lenses, it might just have made her eyes feel better rather than irritated.
