Wordless Wednesday - The Yawanawa

The Yawanawa tribe lives deep in the Brazilian Amazon. The Yawanawa people paint their faces and bodies with annotto, a vivid red pigment, which is derived from the Urukum shrub. Aveda has worked with the tribes people since 1993, where they have organically grown the Urukum shrub which Aveda uses to color their Uruku Collection. This partnership helps to protect the Yawanawa's sacred land, as well as give economic independence to the Yawanawa people.

The photo really makes an impression. And I was really fascinated by Aveda’s partnership. It’s nice to hear some companies still maintain their humanity. Thanks for sharing this.
I second Francesca — The facial design is lovely, but the best part is Aveda working with the indigenous people to protect their homeland as well as provide economically is the very best part!
Lovely photo! I read a little bit more about Aveda and the Yawanawa, and learned that Aveda’s support has helped the Yawanawa construct a health post which has helped to reduce infant mortality in the community caused by malaria. Great stuff!
You have the most interesting usages for make-up. The desire to decorate seems to be very basic and universal. It’s great these peoplles way of life is being supported rather than exploited.
The detail in this makeup job makes this image your best that I’ve seen. That took some time to do.
Wow, Aveda, hm? That’s some makeup worth buying, in my opinion!
So many companies try to “greenwash” their products; it’s nice to hear about one that actually is making a difference.
Beautiful picture, reminds me of henna tattoos.
Very graphic markings! Beautiful!
Wow, that is a beautiful portrait.
Very cool!
Can you please feature some Egyptian eye make-up on wordless Wed? Thanks!
Hey Kat -
I have been looking for egyptian photos to use, because I too think the makeup is wonderful. I can only use photos that either I take or ones where I have permission from the owner to use. But I am looking and once I find one I will definitely post it.
Thanks for commenting!
